JUDYTH: St. Francis College

by Barb Junkkarinen <barbREMOVEjfk@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 25, 2008 at 04:31 PM

There is no shortage of posts where Martin chastises people about
Judyth having been more than an outstanding cancer student, pointing
out she had 2 years of cancer research in college, first at St.
Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then at the University of
Florida, Gainesville, before she went off to New Orleans for the
summer of 1963.

In her book, pgs 25 - 27, Judyth writes on her time at St. Francis
College the Fall of 1961.

She talks about boys, girlfriends, getting involved in campus
activities, going to Notre Dame to see football games ... and being
driven to Notre Dame to deliver her paper before the Indiana
Biological Association. (We now know that paper was co-presented to
the Bacteriology section of the Indiana Academy of Science at their
Fall meeting, at the university in Terre Haute.)

Judyth goes into some detail about her cancer research while there
with a chunk relating about Dr. Ochsner and SV40, which "caused
cancers of many different kinds in assorted animals."

And she notes that she had been sent "a batch of SV40 infected monkey
cells" to work with at St. Francis.

On page 27 she says this:

"By the END OF NOVEMBER 1961, I HAD BECOME AN EXPERT IN MAKING THIS
CANCER STRAIN MORE POTENT...." [emphasis mine-bj] And goes on to say
that, aware of what she had done, she felt she had lost her way,
etc...

She begins the next paragraph like this:

"Aware of our race with the Russians to try to produce a more vicious
cancer than they, I was no longer certain of the ethics involved.
After prayer, I wrote to my parents about my intentions to become a
nun." This continues with the telling of how this horrified her
parents ...and her mother, and aunt and an uncle "immediately drove in
a non-stop trip, arriving in the middle of the night, and grabbing the
first clothes they spotted in her room" then located her at her part
time switchboard job at the college and "wrestled me into their car"
... and lectured her all the way back to Florida. They had removed her
from the college.

But on the preceding page, after a paragraph detailing how wonderful
campus life was, talking about the Halloween dance and then saying,
"My friends kidnapped me the next morning, and I was afraid I'd be
covered with red goop, too, but instead I got a new perm and some new
make-up .....We had fun enjoying the football game and meeting
football players. Little did I know IT WOULD BE MY LAST WEEKEND AT ST.
FRANCIS."

Haloween in 1961 was on a Tuesday, which makes the weekend of November
4 - 5 her last weekend at St. Francis. That rather conflicts with the
SV40 telling on the next page about, "by the end of November" being an
expert, having ethical thoughts, writing her parents about becoming a
nun ...and then the relatives arriving to take her out of college.

Which is it?

Don't know. All we have on either is Judyth's sayso.

But either way, the salient point is that she withdrew from
St.. Francis College before the end of the semester ... and thus,
earned no credits.

I was able to verify with the St. Francis (now University of St.
Francis) registrar that Judyth did attend that Fall ... and withdrew
with no credits earned. The registrar is a terrific lady named
Barbara. Unable to find Judyth in any database ... because transcripts
from that far back are not all yet scanned in ... she made a trip to
where the old paper files are kept and called me back the next morning
(this was in early March) saying she had found Judyth's record.

The record does not reflect the date she withdrew, just that she did.

She was also able to tell me that there was a note attached to
Judyth's record that, under FERPA, can only be divulged to Judyth or
with her properly executed permission.

I want this to be perfectly clear ... this registrar IN NO WAY
VIOLATED FERPA ...but through a series of questions she was
able/allowed to answer, I was able to ascertain that there was no
mention of nuns, but that her parents did have some involvement in
coming to the college and getting her.

The reason ...and when ... will remain a mystery unless Judyth
arranges to have the information released,

That transcript with the note attached is THE ONLY record the
registrar has. There is no mention of scholar****ps or grants, etc on
that record.

But I was able to check on a couple other things at the college.

In her source notes, pg 650, note #63, Judyth writes:

"My. St. Francis records show my "tuition" being paid - over and
over.It looks quite strange until one realizes that these do***ents
and letters record the flow of some funds to set up research there."

Martin has posted that he has seen ALL of Judyth's do***entation.
QUOTE from February 6, 2005:
"Do you seriously think I'm INVENTING the do***entation? I've seen ALL
of it, and it will be in the book."

So, Martin, where are all these do***ents and letters?

I can tell you where they are not. They are not in any records at St.
Francis College as both the admissions (Rodney) and Financial Aid
(secretary who checked with others and re****ted back to me)
departments have told me that all of those types of records ...
tuition, scholar****ps, grants, etc ... are routinely destroyed 3 years
after someone graduates or leaves. They retain nothing like that.
Rodney noted that the only record that remains after the 3 years is
the student's transcript record with the registrar.

I post source note #76, pg 651...

"I have copies of the text of a dissertation on file at St. Francis
University, plus the librarian's quotations from additional sources,
detailing the sudden loss of millions of dollars in funds at the time
I left St. Francis. The planned for technology building's construction
was delayed for ten years. Plans for a planetarium were also scrapped
when I left. ..."

Soooo, Judyth left after about 9 weeks because her Catholic family
freaked about her wanting to be a nun and St. Francis lost millions of
dollars of funding.

Go figure the golden goose working a middle of the night campus
switchboard job!

Somebody else can pursue that one if they want.<g> Unless the
disseration and quotations are lamentations on the loss of Judyth
causing the loss of all this funding and plans having to be scrapped,
.... this one can just get heaped onto the inflated, embellished Judyth
says so pile, in my opinion. And I think a trend is developing on how
those "sayso" things stack up when one does a little checking.

Barb :-)
