Astrosorting Music Organization Database (AMODB) - free, public

by Apollia <xerxes112@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 6, 2008 at 08:11 AM

Hi folks. Darn, it has been quiet around here. Time for some
music? :-)

I recently finished my first big project using the computer
programming language PHP and a MySQL database (both of which I really
should have learned how to use many years ago, since they're
incredibly useful), and a bit of JavaScript.

I call it the Astrosorting Music Organization Database (AMODB).

It enables you to easily organize your music collection, search
through it, generate custom music playlists in .m3u format (which can
be used in Winamp, and probably other audio software) based on
numerous of the criteria of your choice, etc.

It's public domain, because even "copyleft" has too many rules for my
liking. It's available here:

http://astroblahhh.com/software/amodb/index.shtml

Rather than being limited to being used on a single computer platform
(like Windows, MacOS, or Linux), it can (I assume) be used (perhaps
with a few modifications) on any platform which can run web server
software like Apache, and a MySQL database, and PHP. Its interface is
accessed through any common web browser.

I've only ever used it on Windows XP with the Windows version of xampp
(an easily-installed distribution of the Apache web server software,
bundled with PHP, Perl, MySQL, and other stuff), but hopefully it will
work OK on other set-ups too.

Unfortunately, it won't be totally simple to install, and there might
be potential internet security hazards just as a result of running web
server software on your computer. I recommend reading the AMODB's
Readme file - which might actually dissuade you from trying to set it
up at all, but, oh, well...

The AMODB features the "astrosorting" sytsem of music organization I
came up with several years ago, described here:

http://astroblahhh.com/music/astrosort/systemdesc.shtml

The system features the following planet labels: Mercury, Venus, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Eris (for songs with
discord and other annoyances in them).

Each song is assigned up to three main labels, just based on what the
songs sounds like. (However, often additional labels seem
appropriate, so there's a Sublabels text field allowing you to add in
additional labels, as well as checkboxes and a little text box for
each planet label allowing you to optionally enter a rating from 1
(barely present) to 4 (very strong) ).

The first label is the most im****tant one, the second is a strong
modifier of the first label, and the third, and any labels beyond
that, add still more detail.

Each label encomp***** various adjectives and emotional tones which
might describe a piece of music, and since the system was inspired by
astrology, these adjectives and emotional tones correspond a lot to
the astrological meanings of the planets.

As you might expect, Jupiter music is often exuberantly happy, Venus
music is often sweet, pretty and calm, Pluto music is generally scary,
disturbing and intense, etc.

Numerous examples of legally free music, downloadable from the web,
sorted according to this sytem, are listed on the following pages.
So, even if you can't or don't want to try out the AMODB itself (or
have no use for it), you can at least enjoy some wonderful music:

http://astroblahhh.com/music/astrosort/uranus.shtml
http://astroblahhh.com/music/astrosort/neptune.shtml
http://astroblahhh.com/music/astrosort/pluto.shtml

Most of those are brilliant amateur video game music remixes.

There is no Eris page, because I can barely stand to listen to any
music which I would be inclined to put Eris as its first label. :-)

Though, such music does exist, and two horrendous examples are linked
to from here:

Possibly this system might be of educational value to students of
astrology, or in helping to introduce non-astrologers to the meanings
of the planets in astrology.

It might to help people get an intuitive grasp of the essential
meanings of the planets in a rather unusual, largely nonverbal way.

But even if it doesn't, that's OK, because its main purpose is to
serve as a way to organize your music collection, and search it,
easily make playlists out of it, etc.

I hope you enjoy it. Comments, questions, feature requests,
suggestions, etc. are of course welcome.
