I have been working on my family tree...it's quite a job with one
branch going to the earliest English settlers in New England and
another stopped at my grandmother the "doorstep child" and my mother's
side needing me to learn how to read Italian ;)
One ancestor of mine died in Liberia at the time of that failed
experiment in which some free African-Americans in New England went to
Liberia in the hopes of founding a nation where African-Americans could
safely go to and leave the US. I believe this was something Thomas
Jefferson sup****ted to solve the "Negro problem" and the eventual goal
would have been to free the slaves and also send them to Liberia.
I do not know if any white people went along in the earliest boats to
"help". If not, then I have a black ancestor. Sadly, my most racist
relative who espoused the one-drop rule has passed away; I would have
really enjoyed telling him the news!
