Shortly after Burning Man 2006, the homepage for Burning Man was
hacked. Most of that site is still down, including ePlaya, the main
communication resource for the Burning Man community, with no timetable
in place for the restoration. Considering the immense size of the site,
the all volunteer crew manning it certainly has a lot to do to get it
working again.
While there isn't much that those I know can do to help the ePlaya tech
team with that very real source of frustration, we can at least offer
to relieve some of the frustration of those who were in the middle of
discussions on the boards and have found themselves unable to continue
for a while, now. There is a new section for the Travel to Burning Man
board entitled "ePlaya in exile" set up specifically to give ePlayans a
place to hang out during outages:
http://bmtraveller.proboards56.com/index.cgi?board=eplaya
That forum is explained in this post: http://tinyurl.com/oe4uf
There are a few people (two to be exact) who are no longer welcome on
"Travel to Burning Man", generally with fairly good reason (eg.
spamming), but as for the rest of the users of ePlaya, personal
differences elsewhere should not be seen as being a reason to feel that
one would not be welcome to use this unofficial backup resource.
Another site offering its sup****t to the tem****arily displaced ePlaya
community is one which I have a little more of a connection to: the
Stop! at Burning Man list, located at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stopburningman/
Normally, the description of this list says it all:
"Have you ever been at Burning Man and seen something that grabbed you
so much you just had to STOP and at least take a look? This list is for
discussing Burning Man experiences that just stopped you in your tracks
like that. Maybe good, maybe strange, but something that made you
notice and remember it."
but for now, we're putting aside the "prose haiku" concept, and
welcoming all Burning Man related discussions. Aside from the equally
intimate club of those who managed to get themselves banned from this
list, the ePlayans in general are welcome to join and keep their
discussions going while the mess gets straightened out. Again, we're
looking at a grand total of two people who've been banned (one of them
for flipping the bird to the owner after being told to cool it during a
flamewar), so almost everybody is welcome to take part.
We hope this helps. If you have any questions, please drop by the
yahoogroup you see the url for, above. This hotmail account that I'm
using is very tem****ary, something I've set up to minimize the amount
of spam that ends up in my own box, so I probably won't see any queries
send to it. Post them to the new stopburningman list (not to be
mistaken with the defunct group at the same location once run by
stopburningman.org), however, and I've be happy to answer any
reasonable, polite questions you may have.
