Western culture doesn't know how to deal with mystics. In my case, my
Church (Swedenborgian) is based on the Bible and mystic writings but I
had a lot of negative feelings about taking my problems to a minister
because I thought I would be judged. It wasn't until I opened up and
found a more spiritual organization within the Church, did I start to get
relief. John of the Cross helps, too. The Dark Night is a wonderful
work on the depressive episodes. Another good article is here:

I usually talk to God by reading and meditating on the Bible. Listening
to my favorite music can list my spirits. He is a 'small, still, quiet'
voice' I've learned over the years to keep some of the things I hear to
myself -- a secret. It's sacred between God and I. Sometimes, I can
feel myself (ego) let go and a new identity. It was these times in the
past I had to be hospitalized.
Now I know that's the peak of the ecstasy. To prevent a psychotic
episode, I just have to remember it's a spiritual rebirth. Needless to
say, it's very powerful and life changing..
