True Empathy
"To empathize does not mean to join in suffering, for that is what you
must
<refuse> to understand." (T-16.I.1) The word "refuse" is italicized
(i.e.,
emphasized) in the text.
For new students, the ACIM chapter on True Empathy is one of the more
dissonant and disconcerting of ACIM's teachings.
With today's communication technology we are constantly confronted
with
images and stories of people in pain and those in dangerous
situations.
Most of us have been taught since early childhood that commiserating
is a
sincere form of love for our brothers. When a brother is in pain or in
danger it seems quite natural to conjure up a sensation of pain or
fear that
is similar to what we think that our brother is experiencing. Based on
this
"empathy" we can be aroused to help our brother, or to "righteous
indignation" and to condemn those who are threatening our brother.
According to ACIM "this is what you must <refuse> to understand."
This seminar will focus on describing and justifying the specific
responses
we should and should not make to feelings of empathy.
Today's radio, TV and internet technology can be a source of binding
us to
the pain or the world, or a means to develop a close and trusting
relation****p with Holy Spirit. We have the power of choice!
