Not necessarily. Most of us are capable of wandering down the tunnel
(or some version thereof) our own when we've been around a few times
and know the drill (or at least recognize the situation once the grip of
the body and its concerns is let go). Beyond that, it depends: do you
want some quiet time on your own to think things over? You'll be on
your own til you're done with that and read to start networking with
others over plans for your next outing on the physical. Do you long to
re-encounter old friends, family, lovers? They, or at any rate souls
wearing those reassuring forms, will oblige. Some people lock
themselves into bubbles of illusion for a time, reflecting their
convictions of a Heaven or a Hell (poor Jean Paul Sartre, stuck in his
after-death closet of nothingness until he gets so bored that he breaks
himself out of it!).
A year or so after my father died I dreamed I found him sitting cutting
his nails on his bed in the apartment he'd lived in next to me for 20
yrs. Asked him if he knew he was dead: "Of course I know. I've been
through this a hundred times," he growled, just as sweet as ever. It
was time, in the dream, for him to move on, so I helped him and we
walked a bit ("Don't walk so fast, you know I can't walk so fast!")
until the light was ahead, and I pointed. "Oh yeah," he said. "I was
thinking about that; I was just going to do that." He asked for a kiss,
stiff and shy the way he'd always been: "We didn't do that," he said,
meaning that he had died before I could get to the nursing home and say
goodbye. Then he headed for it, standing taller and walking more firmly
as he went; paused to ask me if I was looking after his annoying pain in
the ass of a whining old cat, and when I assured him she was okay, he
said, "That's okay, then," and walked into the light.
Not exactly what you're talking about -- he sort of met me, and he was
the dead one -- but it was clear as a bell and completely convincing (to
me -- nobody else has to share my conviction, of course), and that plus
a couple of other experiences tells me that there's lots going on over
there, and that we come and go between these planes until we're done
with whatever it is we're doing by that.
There are also shamans in some cultures who specialize in visiting the
vestibule of the spirit world, as it were, to coax reluctant dead people
on to the next stage so they won't hang around bothering the living. In
general, I think there's at least as much help coming from this side for
people crossing over as there is over there.
Just some anecdotal evidence, since you asked.
