In this book, Sydney Shoemaker discusses what must be true of mental
properties and their instances if non-reductive physicalism is true.
Physicalism is the view that all states and properties of things, of
whatever kind, are physical or physically realized. Non-reductive
physicalism is the view that some types of states and properties can
be realized in several ways. Functional states and properties are good
examples of such multiply realizable states and properties. For
example, the property of being usable as a brake can be realized in
lots of ways. In the philosophy of mind, non-reductive physicalism is
the view that mental states and properties can be realized in
