A Coquitlam RCMP officer has been found guilty of assaulting a man while
off
duty.
On April 1, 2006, Const. Dinesh "Dennis" Reddy and other off-duty officers
were at a Lougheed Highway Boston Pizza socializing when two of the
officers
confronted three male patrons.
Reddy and another officer, Const. Darryl Tsui, pursued the three men
travelling in a Grand Prix, and on-duty members started a "Code 5"
takedown
of the three men on Mary Hill Road.
The off-duty officers stuck around for the takedown and, at one point,
Reddy
and Tsui were found to have used excessive force while trying to help with
the arrests.
Reddy and Tsui were charged with assaulting Karim Hassan and obstructing
their fellow police officers.
A sentencing hearing for Reddy has been set for Dec. 18.
Tsui pleaded guilty Nov. 5 to assaulting Hassan. He is scheduled to be
sentenced Dec. 19.
A charge of obstruction against Tsui has not yet been addressed.
Both officers are on active duty and have been since the incident.
"In this case, Supt. Peter Lepine performed a risk-*****sment and
determined
that both members were fit for active duty," Coquitlam RCMP spokeswoman
Cpl.
Brenda Gresiuk said yesterday.
Disciplinary action is currently under way.
