I can remember when the pledge went ""I pledge allegiance to the Flag of 
the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, 
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.",

This was before 1954, when the Bible Bangers (tm) got so much control in 
the US again.  "In God We Trust" did not appear on paper money until 
1957. The motto first appeared on coins back in 1864, but for the first 
88 years of our country (counting from 1776) there was no religion on 
our money or flag pledges at all!
