The problem with the hike is the footing was really soft after a
while. It was like walking on the beach. Easy on your feet, but each
step was really like 2/3 of a step when going uphill. Glenn indicated
it was 5 hours up and 2 down. That reflects the steepness and the
footing.

If you are not hauling much gear, you can just park near the spring.
Hiking the first mile is easy, i.e. all level. The road up to the peak
gets crappy fast. I groomed it quite a bit when I visited the area,
removing about 3/4 of the land mines (tire killing rocks).

I camped out on a hill near the spring. You wouldn't want to be right
next to the spring unless you enjoy hanging out with wildlife. All I
saw were wild horses, but I'm sure every critter in the area knows of
the spring.

I started a webpage on the trip:
http://www.lazygranch.com/stonewall_mountain.htm
If you look at photo with the vehicles that are traveling (as opposed
to being targets), there is traffic on that road most of the evening.
Since I was parked on a hill, I'm sure I was very visible to the road
traffic, but here you are dealing with Nellis rather than Groom Lake.
I don't think security cared much about my presence. Plus who is
stupid enough to enter a live fire range.
