JUDYTH: The green glass

by Barb Junkkarinen <barbREMOVEjfk@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 15, 2008 at 01:56 PM

On pages 369 & 370 of her book, Judyth relates a rather long and
complicated story of how LHO came to give her a green glass that was
being packaged along with Luzianne Tea (another Reily product) as part
of a one week promotion. This day was the last day of the promotion,
Oswald had been ordered to help on the line packaging the last run,
there was a surly foreman who Judyth tried to make a deal with to pay
for a package in installments so she could have a green glass ... and
ultimately, an angry Oswald snatched up a glass and gave it to Judyth
.... then had a heated exchange with the foreman.

A couple months ago, I decided to write customer service and ask if
there had been a green glass and tea promotion in the summer of 1963
(Judyth says this happened on July 19th).

I received this reply:

Dear Ms. Junkkarinen:

Thank you for your message. We always enjoy hearing from consumers
interested in our products.

These green glasses did exist and were issued in 1959 - 1960 with the
purchase of ¼ pound packages of Luzianne Tea as a one-time promotion.
They are green glass, clear footed goblet-like glasses. If employees
purchased this tea then I would imagine that they would have received
this also.

As to where one may be able to find these glasses, perhaps an antique
or collectibles dealer - - also, one may find this on the web site
such as E-Bay or Craig’s List.

We wish you good luck in your search - we hope you will try and enjoy
the fine foods manufactured by Reily Foods Company.

Sincerely yours,

I replied and attached the photo available online of Judyth's green
glass.

I was told in reply that the glass certainly looks like the
description she has in the records, but they have no picture and she
has never seen one of the glasses.

I agree ... Judyth's glass looks exactly like what is described. Here
is the link to the jpg of Judyth's glass:

I don't think there can be any doubt Judyth has a green glass that
Reily gave away with tea.

The conflict is that I asked specifically about 1963, and what Reily
found and replied to me was that what they termed a "one time
promotion" occurred in 1959 - 1960.

Judyth says it was a 1 wee promotion in 1963.

The long (1959 - 1960) promotion makes sense ... people like to be
able to collect an entire set.

Could there have been another promotion of the same glasses in 1963?

Sure, why not ... but again, I asked specifically about 1963, and was
told this "one time promotion" happened in 1959 - 1960.

Could Oswald still have given Judyth the green glass?

Sure, why not. Judyth could have also gotten one on her own .... old
leftover promo items left laying around ... either one of them could
probably have gotten one. Judyth, afterall, was the VP's secretary,
right?

So, the question/conflict is not the green glass ... it did exist, it
was a promotion item with tea ... but the company says 1959 - 1960 ...
not 1963.... the question is the manner in which she came to have the
glass. Is her story about the big flap back on the packing line, the
surly foreman, etc true?

Only if they ran a promotion packaging those glasses with tea sometime
other than the 1959 - 1960 "one time promotion" Reily replied to me
about.

Not impossible ... but not when Reily said it happened.

More recently, I contacted Reilly again, asking about verifying
employment, position, manner of leaving and why. They replied that:

I am sorry but our company policy prohibits us from providing
information on former employees.

Pretty much the reply I expected. Judyth would have to sign a release
saying it was okay to release that sort of info.

Which leaves us with two more questions....

*Was* she ever asked to do so? And if not, *why* not?

Barb :-)
