Iraq Green Zone shelled amid sandstorm

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Suspected ****ite extremists hammered the U.S.-protected
Green Zone Sunday in the fiercest salvo in weeks, apparently taking
advantage of a sandstorm that blanketed the capital and grounded the
American aircraft that normally prowl for launching teams.
Thunderous explosions resounded throughout the evening as rockets or
mortar shells slammed into the heavily fortified area in central Baghdad.
Anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, meanwhile, rejected terms set by the
Iraqi government for lifting a crackdown against his Mahdi Army

or Japan, where the average hits 50mpg. Here in the United States, we're
stuck at 25mpg in our considerably larger and more powerful cars, trucks
and SUVs.
Here's the dirty little secret: we can. "If you want better fuel
economy, it's just a question of when auto companies want to do it and
when consumers decide they want to buy it," says Don Hillebrand, a
former Chrysler engineer who is now director of trans****tation research
for Argonne National Labs. "Auto companies can deliver it within a year."

Greenspan, Bush to blame for U.S. crisis: Stiglitz

VIENNA (Reuters) - Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and
the government of President George W. Bush were to blame for the U.S.
financial crisis, Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz said in a
magazine interview.
"This man (Greenspan) has unfortunately made a lot of mistakes," said
former World Bank chief economist Stiglitz, according to a preview of
the interview to be published on Monday in profil magazine.

Afghan president escapes assassination bid

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai escaped unhurt on Sunday
after an assassination attempt by Taliban fighters who fired guns and
rockets at an official celebration near the presidential palace in Kabul.
Karzai, government ministers, former warlords, diplomats and the
military top brass ducked for cover after gunfire sounded at the event
to mark the 16th anniversary of the fall of the Afghan communist
government to the mujahideen.
