GRNC Update 07-20-08:
SB 2081 NRA Takes Credit For GRNC Amendments
Mark Twain noted that "No man's life, liberty, or property is safe
while the legislature is in session." So it can be said that life,
liberty, and property are now safe... at least from the North Carolina
General Assembly that is.
In a recent alert, NRA touted SB 2081 as a pro-gun bill and took
credit for its passage. This is not exactly correct. SB 2081 was not a
pro-gun bill, but it was rendered no more harmful than the federal
"NICS Improvement Act" by special amendments drafted by GRNC and
introduced by Senator PHIL BERGER. These three improvements added by
the diligence of Sen. Berger softened the bill to the point that GRNC
backed away from its original opposition (at a time that NRA was
already neutral) to a neutral posture.
There is one position from which the NRA may take credit for SB 2081
from, however; the federal "NICS Improvement Act" placed mandates for
states to pass legislation similar to SB 2081. Since NRA backed this
bad federal legislation that "We the People" have been saddled with;
in a manner of speaking, they can take credit for its passage. The
acceptable end product with the softening amendments were all due to
the diligence of GRNC and the pressure applied by you fine people. Let
NRA-ILA know that you are aware of this.
