Gas prices are not only hurting millions financially, but it may be
costing some seniors their lives.

As gas prices rise to astronomical heights -- The national average
price of gas reached $4 last week -- and consumers get hit with high
grocery bills, some of the nation's most defenseless are left to fight
a battle: Against hunger.

This is clearly seen in nonprofit food delivery programs to home-bound
seniors, such as Meals on Wheels. In these programs, oft-times
volunteers deliver meals to the elderly. Nowadays, volunteers are
finding it hard to afford the gas needed to make these trips.

The Meals on Wheels Association of America has seen a 58% loss in
volunteers in May due to gas prices alone. "Our programs have to cut
back on everything," said Enid Borden, President and CEO of the MOWAA.
Now, "sometimes volunteers are only able to go out once a week or
every other week.."

The one meal a day can turn into no meals a day, or a meal and frozen
meal (per day). 4 out 10 seniors sit on a waiting list waiting and/or
hoping to be one of the million to receive a meal each day.

It's not just meals that the elderly are missing out on. Also, there's
missed or reduced human contact for seniors that are often considered
"shut ins." The loss of volunteers that offer a friendly hello or can
look at the health of seniors can be devastating. One Meals on Wheels
program that had to minimize its senior visits was informed of two
deceased senior citizens left for as many as seven days.

The recent funding loss is not simply due to individual volunteers.
"When there is an economic downturn, no segment of the economy is off
the hook," says Borden. Citymeals-on-wheels, which serves New York
City's elderly, knows this firsthand. While donor contribution is up
13%, Citymeals has been hit by a decline in the cor****ate sector and
special events. Bear Stearns was a major contributor, and the
organization lost $500,000 in charitable contributions after the
firm's troubles. "To lose a half a million dollars in the last quarter
of the year, that was very tough, and that's money that will not back
back," says Marcia Stein, executive director of Citymeals. "It'll take
many years to recover.

And, that's what Citymeals is trying to do. Taking tips from the
Barack Obama campaign, the organization is turning towards the web.
Created 26 years ago, in response to the discovery that home bound
seniors were forced to go without food from Thursday --Thanksgiving
Day-- through Monday, Citymeals is looking for innovative ways to
raise capital. "We know we have to win over a younger generation, and
they're going to start off by making $12 and $25 donations."

Small and large donations are equally im****tant in these times. Since
2007, the price of weekend meals alone has increased by $1 million.
And, the charge for diesel fuel for many of the programs vans has
doubled. While downsizing to a small cars or domestic vacations may be
the option for many Americans looking to save during these times, says
Stein, "what are the choices for older people? They don't have the
option of going shopping if no meals come through, they're not going
to the store because they'll be dead before they get there. All they
can do is wait for someone to bring them a meal."

This is when those big oil companies should be human and give gas
cards to organizations like this! But who am I kidding..as long as
their pockets get fat, they probably don't care gives a crap if the
elderly get a meal!

My 90 year old father delivers meals on wheels to less fortunate
senior citizens and disabled people. It is one of the most wonderful
charities you can donate to. For some people, it is their only
connection to the outside world. For many of them, it is their only
chance for a hot meal.

I'm glad that your father can contribute to the meals on wheels
program. I do this once a week and have helped for almost two years. I
had to get a sub a couple of times because I didn't have enough gas
last month. But I know this is a ministry and I am one that is able to
reach these dear people. I cry when they pass away or something
happens to them.
Everyone! Please su****t this program--one day it could be you or
someone in your family.
God Bless America

Kim,
They don't because they would consider the elderly who don't drive is
not an asset to them.
That's okay....what goes around, comes back.

It's not like the oil companies want to hike prices. They have to
because there's less oil these days.

there is plenty of oil...watch the news. Consumption is down yet the
prices are going up and Bush just vetoed the Democrats to do away with
tax credits to the oil companies. People need to be aware of what is
going on around them and get people who care in Wa****ngton

Our city had that problem for rides for the elderly for doctor
appointments. Luckily they got a grant from the government for a
driver. Meals on wheels is a more im****tant program for the elderly.
It is between life and death. Grants should be made immediately for
Meals on Wheels. It is a disgrace to help other countries first before
ur own. Yes we should help if possible but our tax dollar should go to
our own first. There is no reason for such a thing to happen. Oil
companies could well afford to give gas for this and take it off of
their taxes. The same with the rich. Especially the ones who own 2-3
homes in different countries. Do not forget who made you rich so you
could have these homes. A donation each year would help ths program to
survive. Take it off of your taxes. Humanity comes first especially
after what this country did for you. Young people could certainly get
together and help out with car pools. . Some day that might be you all
alone and hungry.

this damn forsaken country. It is a real sin the way they treat the

You got that right Patty. I don't get Meals on Wheels, but am on Sr.
income and have to have an aide shop for me. I guess I am one of the
lucky ones, but on the budget of a Sr. on disability, trust me, you
would not want to eat as I do. It is a disgrace the way this country
treats the disabled and elderly, and they, the U.S. Gov't. right now
should fund Meals on Wheels for those who have nothing to eat at all.
My heart goes out to them. I know what "hunger" is.

thats not helping the elderly are the disabled like me.
They could stop this gas from costing so much but if they do they
won't get richer.I wish just for one week they had to live on what
some of us do.
Very upset,

You may deduct 0.14 cents per mile. Increasing this deduction to cover
the cost of $4.00 plus a gallon would most certainly be of help.

Big oil companies are grabbing all the money they can right now to
line their pockets. Interesting how oil prices rise, right in time,
while we receive our government incentive checks. No coincidence? Oil
companies are raking in billions in profits, and are not doing enought
to invest in viable alternative energy such as the sun. Don't tell us
they don't want to hike prices.
