"C" the Secret Life of Sir Stewart Menzies: Spymaster to Winston
Churchill by Anthony Cave Brown. Contrary to popular opion, that
Parliament and the Prime Minister hold the real power in Britain, the
author of "C" repeatedly stresses the very real power of the Sovereign
over the SIS, claiming even that the tradition of all SIS members
being anonymous by Act of Parliament dates back to Henry VII which the
Project identified as the first reign of the "Conspiracy." Henry VII,
according to Brown, made the post of spymaster of England the "Royal
Gift" which it remains to this day! Brown also makes much of the
ritualistic personal pledges of fealty unto death required of Menzies
as "C" to the King. Brown also reveals America's most Anglophile pro-
British Anglophile "citizens" who met as the "Walrus Club" throughout
the 1930's and plotted successfully to bring America into sup****t of
the British Empire, culminating in America's entry into World War II.
Perhaps most controversial, Brown presents the theory that Kim Philby
may have been acting under Menzies' orders when he delivered secret
intelligence to Russian and then defected early in the Cold War, an
obscure strategem that Brown cannot fathom. However, Menzies known
hostility to America's economic world domination, a sentiment surely
shared by the Crown, may provide the answer. The Crown may have
ordered a tilt toward the Soviets to "balance" the overweening power
of America after WWII.
