Police shootings seldom end well for criminals

Some shootings when cops were shot or shot at:
- - May 1, 2002 -- Michael David Syrnyk, 32, fired at two Winnipeg police
officers, sparking a 12-hour standoff at a massage parlour in Winnipeg's
Chinatown. Const. Daryl Smuttell was struck in the neck and upper arm
with shotgun pellets, while Const. Mark Philippot suffered several cuts
to his face from flying glass.
- - Oct. 20, 1985 -- Constables Kelly Harrington and Kim Koswin were
investigating a school break-in when Bruce Roy Brown, 22, opened fire
with an assault rifle. Harrington was struck in the right thumb and left
hip. Koswin was hit in the right arm.
- - March 20, 1984 -- Const. Rick Donovan was shot in the chest point
blank by a shotgun fired by drug dealer Marcel DuCroix. Donovan's life
was spared by a newly purchased bulletproof vest, one of the first to be
used by Winnipeg cops.
- - Jan. 15, 1975 -- Const. John Martin and his dog, Axel, tracked down
Henri Jenrich Kraus in Brooklands. During the struggle with Axel,
Kraus's gun went off and he was killed.
- - June 26, 1970 -- Det. Ron Houston was stabbed to death by Thomas Mason
Shand. After stabbing Houston in the chest, Shand took the officer's gun
and fired one shot at the downed officer. Shand also fired, and missed,
at Det. John DeGroot.
- - July 18, 1969 -- Const. Len Shakespeare, 26, of the St. Boniface
Police Dept. was shot and killed by career criminal Clifford Wicket
Lurvey. Sentenced to hang, Lurvey died in 1978.
- - July 15, 1950 -- Sgt. James Edwin (Ted) Sims was shot to death by
Henry Malanik, 48, in an Argyle Street home while investigating a
domestic dispute. Malanik recovered from three police shots. On June 17,
1952, Malanik had the distinction of being the last person to drop
through the gallows at Headingley Gaol.
- - Feb. 10, 1940 -- Const. John McDonald was shot to death by Mike (The
Horse) Attamanchuk, who also wounded Const. Norm Stewart, during a
shootout at 120 Fort St.
- - Feb. 25, 1937 -- William Morton was shot and killed by Const. James
Davies moments after the man had fired a shot at Const. James. S. Gray.
- - Feb. 7 1936 -- Const. Charles Gillis died from a shot to the chest
fired by Ian Murray Bryson on Jan. 24, 1936. Bryson was hanged on Nov.
20, 1936.
- - July 24, 1934 -- Sgt. John Verne, of the St. Boniface Police
Department, was shot and killed while chasing drug addict George Jayhan.
Jayhan was hanged in Headingley Gaol on Feb. 12, 1935.
- - May 28, 1926 -- Wilfred Bonnin shot and killed a bank clerk on Logan
Avenue. Bonnin was in a shootout where he wounded Insp. George Smith
before he was shot by Det. James Thompson. Bonnin was hanged in
Headingley Gaol on Jan. 25, 1927.
- - June 11, 1920 -- Manitoba Provincial Police constables Alex McCurdy
and James Uttley were shot dead and Const. John Dineen was seriously
wounded by James Buller during a gunfight in the Stockyard Hotel. A year
later, Buller was killed in a police gunfight in Chicago.
