The Utah CCW is a certificate which when produced on demand shows that the
person who holds one, has been cleared by the Utah Bureau of Criminal
Identification to carry a concealed weapon in Utah. No more and no less. A
number of states have reciprocity agreements with Utah, which recognize
Utah's CCW as valid for concealed carry in their state. Several of the
states require the holder of Utah's CCW to be a resident of Utah in order
to
be valid for the purposes of CCW.
It is useful for Canadians to know that the U.S. has some very aggressive
laws regarding the concealed carrying of firearms. To say that the Utah
CCW
is "better than nothing if you're carrying in the US", is like saying that
jumping out of an airplane with a parachute is "better than nothing if
you're going to jump out of an airplane." If one was charged in the U.S.
for a felony weapons offence, it would take a short time to realize that
the
individual would face far harsher consequences than such an arrest in
Canada; in Toronto, for example. I, for one, do NOT want to be in that
position!
Since 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security and other federal
departments, in association with draconian new laws regarding the ability
of
non-Americans to possess firearms in the U.S. have made the Utah CCW a
valuable document for those travelling in the U.S., who wish to carry a
firearm for legitimate defensive purposes.
I don't see what the controversy is about. The Utah CCW is not a pass****t,
nor a visa, nor a scam. It is what it says it is.
