i guess you will get a lot of typical answers... whoever, if he or she
is sociopathic enough to believe they are the center of the universe
(which i guess each of us is...) each will indulge in his or her belief
system... i always have to state or suggest... how is it guaranteed
that this finality will come?... is this end something you can truly
know with certainty... or at least i cannot believe such because i am a
natural skeptic and believe in the hope of mankind to prevail... unlike
certain faitth oriented groups that accept apocalyptic scenarios as the
bread and butter of their system... meaning in other words, if my
natural skeptical, atheistic self were to somehow "know" with absolute
certainty (a conundrum in itself, perhaps a "faith pill" or "absolute
belief pill" that turns off my skepticism) that the end were near in
less that time than say the heat death of the universe... how might i
play out this fantasy? i'd probably indulge in carnality... would i
wish to be "civilized" to the end... ? as for others... as stated, i
believe depending on their belief systems they will find peace however
based on that doctrine, and their true selves will come out... was it
in firefly that the one russian mob boss tortured his victims to "learn
what they really felt" (if i got the episode right)... it would be
interesting to see if somehow, there are people who try to 'get off the
earth' if even to live a little longer to see this end... or depending
on how well the ending event is predicted... let's say it was a tidal
way that was known to wipe out america... how would it play out for the
rich and the poor escaping, if possible to other parts of the world...
and the attendant conditions that ensue...
at this point i must point a most excellent book that came out
recently, pure pop, but VERY well thought out.. World War Z by max
brooks... if a zombie epidemic were to ensue and catalyze the world's
population into various states of redress... one of my favorite scenes
is the "question" of how north korea responds to the relentless zombie
threat... by perhaps having the ENTIRE population of north korea
retreat underground...
perhaps one of the most fantastic movies i have ever seen to address
the end of the world scenario is "the quiet earth".. old as heck (from
the 70s) but the emotional and psychological turmoil that the one
supposed lone survivor of the earth and how he plays out his solitary
life is chilling and honest...
these are perhaps all examples to getting around your initial idea...
what would play out? i also recommend "the earth abides" by george r
stewart... (if large ****tions of the population vanished, how would
this play out) ALSO, the recent movie (which i have not seen, but will
tomorrow) "children of men"... i read the p.d. james book... very
interesting... how does the world respond to the end of fertility, that
is no more children will be born... the death cults are very chilling.
i have said too much.
anyone else's take?
