It usta be called LOGO.SYS.  See the real joke was it had a .SYS
extension, 
which made it seem like it was offlimits to hjumans to touch without 
breaking everything.  But it's just a BMP, as you said, with some screwy 
aspect ratio which I now forget.  There was something magic about the
bottom 
32 pixels going across the BMP, if they were one color then it would make 
the little rainbow thing move on the bottom to show the progression of
time 
viddually.

There was another image with a .SYS extension, too, and doggone if I can't

remember either the name or the purpose.  Mighta been the LOGOFF or
SHUTDOWN 
screen image.

I finally fingered out that the odd size of the BMP was due to the fact
that 
Winders doesn't have all its marbles come boot time, so it throws the
video 
card into some kind of low res mode just to display the logo, and then
later 
on gets around to loading proper drivers and so forth.

Makes you wonder why they just didn't come with a crank.
