This ia an example of "Estuary English", the colloquial  language
around the "Thames Estuary", although It's use is expanding.
Geeza means man, minging means dirty.So:-

from getting dirty.

I am personally skeptical of this explaination since cravats,
neckcloths and so on were often of quite expensive materials. I suspect
that neckwear has always had more of a decorative function. Personally
I find it regrettable that the range of accepted neckwear today has
narrowed down such that Mr Kinky Friedman's ribbon tie should be seen
as something eccentric.
