I doubt it will work. The original Wargames was actually
a pretty thoughtful piece, containing elements of the
"deux ex machina" fear, nuclear fear, computer fear, the
Wizard of Oz, the military-industrial complex fear, and
a healthy dollup of McGyver.
It maintained a comfortable PG tension level through much
of the movie, though some James Cameron-style direction
and camerawork alone could have made it R.
Undoubtedly the sequel will be scared of offending anyone
with politics, the only association most people have with
Homeland Security is air****t screeners, plus the OBVIOUS,
GLARING problem that the star is WHITE and NOT A MOSLEM.
The way Hollywood has confronted this in the past is to
change Arab terrorists into neo-Nazis. In fact, Hollywood
is so paranoid about making some country or racial group
the bad guys that about the only ones they have left are
neo-Nazis, since real Nazis are too old, evil cor****ations
and the US government.
It was positively staggering to see a James Bond movie
taking the bold step of showing North Koreans as bad guys.
They probably had to debate for months whether it would
offend the Norks or not.
Wargames 2 is either going to have to have one hell of a
script, or it is going to bomb.
