>I also remember a hilarious comic book story he did years ago, "Crowbar
the
>Conqueror," or something like that.
Stout's earliest work that i recall was in "CycleToons", where, among
other things he did an absolutely hilarious 3-pager explaining why he
hadn't been contributing to the magazine for a while -- he'd been in
Chicago working/trying out for a job with Kurtzman, working on, among
other things, "Little Annie Fannie".
Those not familiar with Stout and his early career should understand
that he did a motorcycle (sort of) version of "The Raven" featuring
Archie as a member of a motorcycle gang called "The Ravens", and that
he illustrated it in Bill Elder-style art that probably looked more
likke Elder's work than Elder could do.
Stout can -- and did -- do any of the "MAD" gang (and others)
perfectly, as well as having a pleasing albeit sort of nondescript
style that's clearly his own (as on the Firesign Theatre cover).
In one panel of his story about working for Kurtzman, he meets "The
giants of comics" -- "Jack Drawfast! Wally Weird! "Bill Olders!"
Looming over him were the "giants" -- each one recogniseably
caricatured in a perfect pickup of his own style...
"And then he meets the biggest giant of them all..." (says the
caption) "Harvey Kurtzguy!" (again in his own style, and about two
feet tall compared to the others' seven or eight feet. "Gah prunes!"
SAYS kURTZMAN...
