Babes, Booze and Bantha, Oh My!

by iconnu@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Nov 28, 2006 at 10:53 AM

For one of my semester projects, I'm writing a paper about aspects of
the Dragon*Con community. While reading over my most recent draft,
formally known as "the final draft", I decided that it lacked
sufficient representation of the voices of the community. I would like
to add more personal experience from D*C attendees into my paper, but I
am very short on time--it was supposed to be my final draft, after
all--so I'm cross posting this like a fiend.

The disclaimery bits: I will not include any personally identifying
information in the re****t, and it will not be made available publicly
without obtaining consent from the individuals involved. This isn't a
empirical study, I'm just looking for personal experience and
narrative. Answer as many or as few questions as you wish. Responses
can either be made in reply to this post or emailed to me at whadley1
at student dot gsu dot edu.

Name:
Age:
Are you known by a consistent "con name" (e.g. Papa Smurf, Raven,
Wolfman):

Number of years attending Dragon*Con (DC):
First year attended:
Other cons which you attend:

Is there a particular fandom or interest track for which you attend DC?

How im****tant is it to you that you attend Dragon*Con each year?

How im****tant to you is the congoing experience in general?

Why do you attend conventions?

Why do you attend Dragon*Con in particular?

How far do you travel to attend Dragon*Con?

Do you stay at one of the convention hotels? Why or why not?

Do you dress in costume or cosplay during the convention? Why or why
not? If so, as who/what?

Do you feel that there is a con "community"? Do you consider yourself a
part of this community?

Are there any personalities or figures that represent the congoing or
Dragon*Con experience to you, either past or present (e.g. Miss Marvel,
The Elvis Trooper)? What makes these figures significant to you?

How do you divide your time? Do you attend more information, interview,
or community panels

Do you have any recurrent yearly practices at Dragon*Con (Events,
parties, personal practices)? Why do you do them?

Some writers have theorized that fandom can fulfill a spiritual aspect
in fans, supplementing or even supplanting some of the functions served
by a religious community:

--- Do you feel that this has a measure of truth in your own
experience?

--- Do you feel that this has a measure of truth when looking at other
attendees?
