I read this recently, after having seen it praised here for many years,
and
was disappointed, The fantasy world-building is fine, with many clever
touches, but Shea's Cugel was too ineffectual and easy-going, and
<spoiler>
</spoiler>
the final dispensation, which rewards the squire for being an innocent
fool,
is as un-Vance-like as anything could be. Vance doesn't suffer fools
gladly,
but he gladly makes fools suffer.
