techno-lust has struck me again. I've been telling myself for years that
the old pentium II I've been using as a home web server is fine for the
job, and feeling slightly proud that it's now getting on for ten years old
or so. But today I found myself looking at mini-itx.com for a replacement.
I've been doing this on and off for the last 3 or 4 years, but am starting
to think it's time I updated my machine because:
a) it's a bit noisy.
b) I'm concerned that if the power supply blows up while I'm out of the
flat, it could set fire to something.
I'd like to find a replacement that's fanless, uses as little power as
possible, and reasonably compact. What I'm looking at is a
VIA EPIA EK 8000EG mini-itx motherboard with a DC-DC converter and
external AC adapter as the power supply. I like the case at:
http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=3#m200-lcd
- the LCD looks like it could be fun to play with.
Has anyone else tried using a system like this, or do you have any
suggestions for a suitable machine?
Supplementary question - do you know where I can get hold of a memory
stick that has a write-protect switch on it? I want one so that I can run
aide ( http://www.cs.tut.fi/~rammer/aide.html
) from read-only media.
Alternatively, is there any way to hack an IDE-Compact flash adapter so
that it can only write when a switch is held down?
