I had never attended a single C* panel before *the* panel.
Personally, I tended to see panels as a kind of sad part of
Convergence. Since the party is in a different city each year, we
should be getting out there and enjoying the place we've traveled to,
rather than staying holed up in a flourescent lit hotel room all day
long.
I think on occasion, there might be something that's actually useful
or amusing (especially if it's not run so tight-fisted and there is
more vibrant dialogue between everyone), but I don't think they need
to exist just for the sake of existing, and I certainly don't think
they need to exist to the point of being one after another all day
long.
Overall, I think panels reek a bit too much of "convention", and maybe
I'm in denial, but I've never wanted to think of Convergence as a
"convention".
