Ummm... a difficult one. No and yes. No, I don't think my appearance and
tastes are harming my girls; after all, it's *my* personality, not theirs;
as I was stifled as a teenager by an oppressive and possessive mother, I'm
a
great advocate of personal expression. My daughters will be strongly
encouraged to develop their tastes and dress the way they want (if it has
to
be pink and frills, well, be it <shudders>).
The only concern I have is for the impression other parents may form of
me.
We live in a quiet, fairly well-to-do, conservative, 'mumsy' suburbian
area
of London and you just don't see many goths apart from the occasional
'baby
bat'. I find myself toning my tastes down as I don't want to be 'the weird
one' whose kids are excluded because 'their mum dresses funny, maybe she's
in some cult'. I don't know many people in this area yet, in fact I'm
pretty
desperate for some local friends recently I have started to go to mother
and
toddlers groups and I'm really paranoid that my appearance, however tamed,
will put off the other mums.
