i think you just have unusually good eyesight. but in any case, as we
both know, you should *always* design for the lowest likely spec. my
laptop is no hot ****, but it's not ancient or incredibly cheap, either.
it's on par with what most regular folks will be using.
and, umm... it's not any better. the text of the links in the box on
the left is only a smidgen darker than the background. it needs to be
*lots* darker than the background to avoid the eye-bleeding effect.

absolutely. so don't try too hard. give plenty of light/dark contrast
and it'll be fine.
