St. Bernard has managed to get water and power back in some areas, but you
have to have your house inspected by an electrician before it will be
restored on a house by house basis. ****tables have been brought in for
school and the last I heard, 500 students were signed back up. There are
some travel trailers littered around the area, but many are wary of moving
back due to unknown factors such as toxicity of the land and disrepair of
the levee system. My best friend and my sister have purchased homes in
another area of Louisiana, the rest are still trying to figure out what to
do as they were either uninsured or underinsured. It's the same way for
most
of the parish. At least half won't be going back. Myself personally, same
old, same old. High and dry in my home near Tampa (completely unaffected
by
Wilma), wi****ng I could be with my family. We're probably going to be
bugging out of this town in the next year or two as my husband and I have
met a level of disgust with Florida, Tampa specifically, that is almost
intolerable.

Honestly, for those who have lost everything and aren't insured or are
underinsured, 26K isn't going to do much. My sister rebuilt her home 2
years
ago and that cost 90K. She tore it down to the studs and had everything
redone, wiring, plumbing, etc... That was also during a time when 20,000
other people weren't trying to do the same thing. Once she knows what's up
and has decided what she's going to do exactly, I'll be there to help.
I'll
pick up a hammer and do what I can.
