Well, mould doesn't grow that fast, unless you've been at work for

I presume you left them out? On a hot day? When the live bacteria then
start multiplying like crazy? In a very well sealed gas tight container?
Is so, and if it takes a lot of pressure to blow the lid, that could be
the reason ;-)
At least you just have to clean the place.
