Re: self-consciousness

by InvasiveWeed@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lilinoe Kekea) Oct 13, 2006 at 08:26 AM

Yesterday, at McDonald's, I noticed a bus-load of tourists having lunch.
(Japanese) A young couple sat cross-legged in a booth with their
sandals under the seat, school age kids ran through the restaurant with
no shoes at all and, of course, the babies were all barefoot. The
Japanese are used to taking their shoes off indoors.

Another group, from the Mainland, (US) were dressed in aloha ****rts and
straw hats but had kept their hard black shoes and socks on with the
shorts. It's a cultural thing. But it gives the impression that "na
haole" are a little... well... tight, self-conscious.

I think we could relate to our environment better (whatever environment
we find ourselves in) if we could reach it, wiggle our toes in it.
