Well, I admit I didn't try to predict who would get the nominations this
year. Just as well, seeing how wide of the mark I was.
I thought Surf's Up was a dark horse (no pun intended) candidate and that
Ratatouille and Shrek 3 were shoo-ins. I still don't get how Shrek 3
missed it. Dreamworks usually has a heavy hitter represented here.
Persepolis literally squeaked in. From what I can see, it was released in
the US on December 25, so it just made the cut-off. I haven't seen it,
but
a quick review tells me why it was included.
So, what I expected to be Remy and crew waltzing off with the award this
year has changed. Ratatouille was my favorite movie of last year, and
since it is basically a meditation on the nature of art, criticism, and
recognition, the Academy usually loves that stuff At least, in analogous
settings like cooking or painting, behind-the-scenes stuff like The Oscar,
The Lonely Lady, and such don't usually fare as well (there are
exceptions,
like Dreamgirls and Barton Fink). But now, with Persepolis added to the
mix, this is a race between the two.
All I know is, I'll eat my hat if Surf's Up wins.
