history of The Devil's Whisper

by John Olsen <jrolsen@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Apr 7, 2007 at 10:10 PM

What can anyone tell me of the history of "The Devil's Whisper?"
Referring to the chemical paste that creates a small flash and
explosion. When was it first used? By whom? Did it go by another
name? Anything else? My internet search has come up dry.

I know Scotty Phillips has performed it, and I've tried to contact him,
but his email addresses, and web site, don't work anymore. Does anyone
know how to contact Scotty?

For those curious, The Devil's Whisper appeared in over a dozen of The
Shadow pulp novels between 1931 and 1946. Author Walter B. Gibson was
a magician in addition to a pulp writer, of course. But I'm guessing
that The Devil's Whisper predated his first mention of it in 1931.

If you'd like to email me with additional information, ignore the
reply-to address above and send to jrolsen2 at comcast dot net.
Thanks!

John
