There is a new trick on page 17 of the Steven's Magic Em****ium titled
BIG BANG, which retails for $75.oo.
I have not purchased the trick so my explanation is pure speculation.
I believe the secret was lifted from Steve Dusheck's book on
mentalism, however I see no credit given him in the catalog
description.
No matter. I give full credit to Mr. Dusheck for the method I'm
about
to tip. I did NOT invent this trick in any way.
EFFECT:
Magician brings out a clear plastic bag and a light bulb. Both are
passed for inspection. Use any light bulb*. You bring the large
plastic sandwich bag from home (even though it is completely UN-
gaffed). I'll explain why in a moment.
Ask the spectator to place the bulb into the bag, seal it, then hand
it to you.
As with any great mentalism effect, you play this up big. Dream up
your own patter, I'm just here to explain the mechanics.
Holding the top of the bag by your index finger and thumb of the
right
hand, you begin to concentrate. The left hand rests on your brow in
full view.
All of a sudden the bulb inside the bag EXPLODES and shatters into
hundreds of pieces. All can be handed out for exaination.
The effect can be performed with sleeves rolled up, ad you can even
wear a blindfold.
SECRETS (and im****tant information):
Before I explain the mechanics of the secret I'd like to issue a
warning: Use a regular old light bulb for this trick, NOT one of the
new energy saver bulbs that look like a giant glass corkscrew. The
new bulbs contain mercury and even though the bulb is in a bag you
don't want to accidentally drop any of these glass shards on the
floor. A baby crawling around might come in contact with it. And
besides that you don't want to breath these va****s, no matter how
slim
the risk.
OK, that said let's get back to the fun stuff.
First off the plastic bag. Even though it's technically UN-gaffed,
it
is prepared slightly. Only the front is clear and can be seen
through. The back side of the bag should be opaque.
It's not absolutely necessary, but it helps hide the gimmick, which
will be brought into play for only a split second. So fast that they
probably won't see it anyway.
A plastic insert can be cut from an opaque garbage bag, inserted into
the bag and taped in place with double sided tape.
The second part of the trick is the gimmick that causes the bulb to
explode. This gimmick is a type of striking device similar to a
hammer.
Think of it like this: It's basically a shortened Zombie gimmick,
with
a one inch diameter ball bearing epoxied or welded to the end (the
none coil end).
It's about 6 to 8 inches in length.
The coil end of the gimmick is slipped over the middle finger of the
hand holding the plastic bag. When not in use the middle finger
bends
inward and the gimmick rests along the wrist and forearm (just like a
Zombie gimmick hideout).
The bag holding the bulb is held between the index finger and thumb.
The middle finger (same hand) and other fingers are behind the bag.
The middle finger is cocked, so-to-speak along the wrist.
After the build up the middle finger straightens out rapidly and the
ball bearing strikes the light bulb through the bag, shattering it.
It works just like a little hammer hitting the glass bulb. It
appears
to the audience that the bulb exploded inside the bag.
The middle finger immediately bends back into position thus hiding
the
gimmick. The bag and bulb can be passed for examination.
Note that it would be a simple matter to cause a marked coin to
appear
amid the broken glass. A slit could be cut in the top of the bag and
the marked coin dropped into it during the above procedure. If the
back ****tion of the plastic bag were black I see no reason a coin
slide couldn't be slid into the slit in the bag. It would be
invisible and make locating the slit all that much easier.

Hey Billy, I think this Exploding Lightbulb trick is something you
can
Bob can build...for FREE.
If you don't have a ball bearing then use a big old lug nut.
Make the wire part out of a coathanger. Make the coiled up end by
wrapping the wire around a thin broom handle two or three turns.
Then bend the wire at a right anle from the coil and measure off
about
6 inches.
Epoxy or have someone weld the lug nut to the other end of the wire.
Then if you have some flat black spray paint paint the whole thing
black.
It very visual if you can break the bulb in a clear plastic bag. But
you coud also use a white plastic grocery sack, or even a small brown
paper bag.
Sometime I've got to show you and Bob all the cool stuff you can do
with a hollowed out book. For example you can put a mousetrap in it
and with a thread trip the mousetrap and cause the book to fly open,
very spooky.
