On my first trip to LA, I of course had to put in a stop at the
castle. I was told by some friends that the level of skill that
night
was pretty high, and overall I was pretty impressed. Some surprising
things that you just don't *get* from seeing the place on tv/
pictures,
like how tiny the mainstage is! That was actually the least
impressive part of the evening, as we were just too damn close. Bad
palms were definitely in evidence, from one guy in particular, and
that stage is so small with such bad angles as to be completely
unforgiving. The acts themselves were great, though.
I do want to point out one magician in particular: Wayne Houchin. He
did the parlour room, and while other acts that night might have been
funnier, or harder, or fla****er, he was the highlight due entirely to
his stage presence. I've never seen less artifice from a magician.
You got the sense throughout the act that it was just _him_ up there
onstage. And it was completely disarming and very refre****ng.
Thanks to the incompetence of my airline, I'll probably be back
pretty
soon ;)
