Mt. Moriah Baptist Church

This past week, we experience a real touch of revival at Mt.
Moriah Baptist Church in Powhatan, Virgina. We drove on Saturday from
Augusta, Georgia to a very rural area of Virginia about 45 miles west
of Richmond. Pastor Tom Alvis has been serving as senior pastor here
for the last 5 years. This country church was organized in 1850, and
the building we met in was the original structure from the 1880s.
Though the road seemed at a dead end, in the 1860's it was a main
thoroughfare from Petersburg to Appomattox. It was on this road that
General Robert E. Lee road to Appomattox to surrender and end the
Civil War. Several of the families that still attend Mt. Moriah are
descendants of families from the Civil War era. The key to the week of
meetings seemed to be the prior prayers of the church members, who
were very serious and in earnest about God's working. The church has
begun using a special addictions program called Reformers Unanimous,
and a number have been saved through this program. Sunday morning
began the revival with 3 adults coming to Christ. The revival
continued on Monday and Tuesday evening with 7 accepting Christ.
Wednesday evening, we had 7 more receive Christ as Savior. One of the
special things from that night was the joyful and tearful reunion of a
mother and son who had, in their separate programs that evening,
accepted Christ. We rejoiced and wept with them! Thursday evening held
our weekly Cola War, for which we had almost 30 visitors in
attendance, and 7 more were saved that night. On Friday, we had our
Irish Sacred Concert, and the church attendance was a record with 232!
One more adult and three children entered into the family of Christ.
What a God we serve! Praise the Lord for His mighty work in Virginia!
We thank God for Pastor Alvis and his church family for the wonderful
preparation for this week.
