I am no chemist, but it sounds to me like the capsules are made of
gelatin and the foaming is caused by something like baking soda (sodium
bicarbonate).  The "growing hearts" could be made from a compressed
sponge material that expands when wet.  Many years ago, I had bar
sponges (made in France) that reacted this way when wet.

Not having seen the product described earlier I am only guessing, so
don't quote me.
