Illusions for a show ???

by Andy@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Apr 3, 2008 at 12:01 AM

I've been asked to do a magic show for a veterans organization.... All
of the vets are
WWII vintage... late 80's... early 90's. I'm thinking there will be
visual
limitations so the larger more colorful easy to see magic might be better
received.

Never did one of these before... most of my stuff is kid oriented.... so
I'm looking for
some ideas....

Without seeing the venue, I'm assuming some type of stage or platform.
Sound System with wireless. (mine) Lighting will be typical hall type
overhead lights.
Tuxedo. This is more of a benefit..so the fee will be in the $200.00
range.
(not much, I know... it's more of a benefit, but I mention this because
they
will not be expecting stage illusions or dancing girls.

Planning for a show 45 minutes to an hour, with an opening, flow and
finale.

So far, effects that are available....

Mis-made flag
Appearing Flag staff
Midas Dream / Coin Pail - T. Nelson Downs
Appearing Bouquets to Marshall's Botanica production
Square Circle
Rabbit Production
Duane Laflin's Vani****ng Silks

I use a nightclub stage case.. confetti cannon. side tables.

Patter is giving me a bit of a headache.... Most of my past generation
served in WWII
so I'm familiar with the era..... Eisenhower, McArthur, Andrews Sisters,
 Abbott and
Costello, Buster Keaton, Buster Crabbe, Duante, Glenn Miller, the
music of the era,
military life. Should I be doing a magic show, or a ' walk down
memory lane' show?

There is about 6 weeks to the show.... just about enough time to
incor****ate 6 easy
working routines.... or 3 routines requiring a little practice.
There is time for
one live audience rehersal about a week before the show.

Are there any.... quick, easy to learn but impressive stage effects that
you would
recommend....

Any suggestions on illusions... were there any magic shows that ran the
USO
circuit during WWII that these guys / girls might have seen that I can tap
on to
recreate memories ??? Was David Bamburg doing his Oriental Act (FuManchu

was it ?? Blackstone ??? Charlie Miller ???

Any good sources of material ???

Ohh.. I have two props.... WWII gas mask and the old wool scratchy
army blankets...
might be some way to incor****ate them into the act. Any idea on how to
get a WWII
vintage or replica Army Helmet..... maybe there's some way I can get a
volunteer on
stage and dress him / her up while doing a routine...(cork gun anyone
??). what routine
would work ??

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and recommendations...

Andy
