I happened to be in the US on vacation a couple of weeks ago and
caught about
half of the Copperfield special. It reminded me of the LearJet vanish
he did
in the special shown here in the UK a few years ago. It seems to have
caused
some discussion in this group so I thought I'd post my idea on how he
MIGHT
have done it...
A few years ago, the British magician Paul Daniels was interviewed on
a talk
show and was asked "Why can't YOU make a jet disappear?" The answer he
gave was
something to the effect that "Because I don't believe in stooges".
Hmm...
I think that the image on the front screen was a fake. I taped the
programme at
the time and watched the illusion a few times and the image didn't
seem QUITE to
match the plane.
Bearing the above in mind, I think it's quite simple - he removed the
back
screen and rolled the plane out the back...If the front screen image
IS fake
then he had about 30 seconds to do this.
Any comments anyone?

I too thought the image looked fake - especially the light that showed
through
in the cockpit area - and the sharpness of the image. If the image
were
generated by the plane and if there was only one lamp, the image would
be much
more distroted than it was. If there were multiple lamps, the image
wouldn't
be distorted, but the edges would not be sharp due to the paralax
errors
generated by each lamp. I think the image was impregnated in the
front
curtain and illuminated with lamps on the ground between the plane and
the
curtain. Then as you say they had 30 seconds to wheel the plane out
of the
enclosure and out of camera view.
However.... how did they wheel the plane out from inside the ring of
people?
Do we assume they were all in on it?

problem with this. The train car was performed with un-blindfolded
people, as was the other illusions. Making your eyewitnesses wear
blindfolds, then telling the tv viewers that what you will see is
exactly as it appears here is misleading...I could duplicate this
trick by showing my friend a building, telling them to close their
eyes, wait for the building to explode (or whatever), then have my
friend open their eyes again. "Magic!" Any other theories?

Try reading up on the Magic of Northern India, and find a good eye
witness description of the Indian Rope Trick. Once you work that out,
the Lear Jet uses the same principle. By the way I am refering to the
way the Indian Rope Trick was performed in Northern India, not the
description of it in most western magic books, which tend to leave out
the three im****tant points which make it possible.

If I was getting the amount of money he is I would do anything to
make
it look like the plane vanished.
Would you care if all those ppl knew how u did it when you are
counting
your money. the guy all ready uses camera tricks so why wouldnt he.
If they did roll the plane out the back then it would take all those
ppl
to do it in 30 seconds with out using a motorized puller. (ie.
manpower
only, makes no noise)
this is how I think it was done.I thought the interviews after the
trick were not
convincing at all.
the plane could only go two places, out the back, or down below
( which
would cost lots of money)
Now if DC would make the statue of liberty vanish during the day in
broad day light then I would be impressed. His illusions are just
getting
to outrages to be convincing.

OK jim just press the curtain close button and when we tell you press
the open button. You could of had someone vanish the statue and not
even
have to tell them how it was done.

I think you are discrediting David Copperfield's talents by saying
that anyone could have done the Statue of Liberty illusion. I think
you are forgetting that magic is not the amount of lines (patter for
fellow magicians) you say. It is the whole package, the thought
process and realizations of ideas. Why hasn't anyone else I can think
of had the same ideas as David has? David is one of the few people I
know who could have thought of the ideas of vani****ng the Statue of
Liberty and realized them. (successfully, I might add). You forget the
impact he has had on the magic community and the world. Have you ever
thought why it is that : WE ARE STILL PONDERING OVER HIS TRICKS THAT

I'm just waiting for any other established/up-n-coming magician to
also make television specials, so DC isn't the ONLY nationally seen
magician that can do these types of big people-talking-about-it
illusions.
