Bismi Shah!
With the arrival of Ramadhan many will be fasting. Initiation into the
Dawoodi-Bekta**** Order of Dervishes entails forty days of fasting while
reciting and contemplating the first book of Psalms. Of course there is
nothing to keep people who opt to be lone dervishes to engage in this
retreat as well. Ramadhan is of course a good time to begin or finish
one's
initiation, since one is fasting anyway. In four recent posts I have
submitted Psalm texts to help those who have chosen to become initiated
into
the Order.
To be a Dawoodi-Bekta**** in good standing one should adhere to the four
gates of divine law, divine love, awareness and truth, contemplate and
keep
the ten commandments, recite regularly from the Four Books and especially
on
the Sabbath, love and follow the Twelve Imams (as), and follow the Hunkar
Hajji Bektash, especially in liberal thought and the equality between men
and women.
