A friend sent the following:
Dear Friends,
Greetings of love and peace.
Through URI, I have come to believe that the positive future for the
human community and for all life on Earth will only come if we are
willing to widen our experience of "us" to include everyone.
It will only come if, in genuine humility, we commit to mutual respect
and are willing to listen deeply to the experience and vision of others.
It will only come if we are willing to do the hard work to create a
community committed to discovering collective wisdom and to acting for
the good of all.
It will come only if we are willing to surrender ourselves - especially
our fears and hatreds - to the Spirit of love that animates all life.
Every part of me yearned to wake up this morning feeling hopeful that my
country might be ready to move in a direction that makes sense based on
what I have come to know through URI.
But I didn't wake up feeling hopeful. I woke up in despair.
But I also woke up in thanksgiving for the gift and glory of a new day.
In thanksgiving for the extraordinary privilege of being alive to
appreciate this new day and being able to rededicate my life to the work
I believe God has called me to.
In my thanksgiving I sought to surrender the despair I felt to God,
asking God to help me focus not on the despair but on the work for
peace, justice and healing that lies ahead - work that demands my best;
that demands our best.
And so, I write to you, my dear sisters and brothers in the URI, in the
hope and conviction that comes from God and from each of you, pledging
to you and to our world my best for the long journey ahead.
It will be a joy to share the challenges, the defeats and the victories
with you, trusting the ultimate outcome is not in our hands but in the
hands of the Spirit of love that animates all life.
Love, Charles Gibbs
