For they are conventions which guise thoughts and feelings. Of
themselves they are nothing but social arrangements of letters
or symbols. It is the thought-force in the word which makes it
a living thing. This holds true for things other than words
but it is most evident in words which, without that inner
essence, are utterly dead.
