Concord officials plan to allow demolition of a historic downtown
building, even though a state agency says doing so without an
environmental impact re****t would violate California law.
DeNova Homes wants to tear down the 79-year-old Temple of Mt. Diablo
Masonic Lodge to make way for 220 condos on the corner of Galindo
Street and Concord Boulevard.
But the local historical society wants the building preserved. And the
state Office of Historic Preservation recently said the city should
consider alternatives, such as incor****ating the building into the
condo project or moving it.
City officials say an impact re****t is not needed because razing the
Masonic Temple would not adversely affect the environment.
Allen Leung's life was one of seeming contradictions.
He was known as the "dragon head" -- a leader in the closed, sometimes
illicit world of Chinese brotherhoods known as tongs -- but he also
played a very public role in San Francisco as a commissioner of the
Taiwanese government and a member of a local economic task force.
He once shot and killed an intruder in his home, but he was considered
a peacemaker and resolver of disputes within San Francisco's Chinese
community.
He had great power and influence among the city's Chinese Americans but
at times feared for his life because of an extortion plot.
In February, the 56-year-old native of China was shot to death in his
im****t-ex****t business on Jackson Street. A gunman wearing a mask
demanded cash. Leung agreed but was shot anyway as his wife looked on.
BENTONVILLE -- The Bentonville Masonic Temple Association and Trustees
of Pea Ridge Masonic Lodge filed a lawsuit Friday claiming they're
being improperly and inconsistently *****sed property taxes in Benton
County.
The suit, filed by attorneys Charles Davis and Gerald Jenkins, asks the
Benton County Circuit Court to declare the properties exempt from
taxation, to annul *****sments for several years -- including 2003-05
-- and to stop the county collector from trying to collect thousands of
dollars in property taxes.
Defendants are *****sor ****rley Sandlin and Tax Collector Greg Hoggatt.
