Because these small stores cannot buy in the quantity that Wal-mart 
does, they have no choice but to charge more because THEY are being 
charged more.

I used to work for a grocery wholesaler and even though it looks like 
the prices are twice as high as you would pay elsewhere, these smaller 
merchants are lucky if they get a 20%-30% gross profit margin on 
anything they sell.  They aren't gouging you on purpose, they are just 
trying to make a living.

When it comes down to it... I'd rather the money I spend goes back into 
the community, than a thousand miles away.  It's worth it to me to make 
sure Tom's Grocery stays open... because I know his wife... and his kids 
come over and play with my puppy.  He pays half the insurance on all his 
employees because that's all he can afford... but he also gives 
afternoon's off without docking salaries.  When Dayna went into 
labor...he closed the store and took her to the hospital himself. 
Wal-mart would have written her up for leaving her ****ft without 
approval or replacement.

It's about more than price... it's about loyalty.
