Simple. People in real deep trouble often turn to God. Atheism offers
nothing to cling to in the way of hope. Only a person who knew they
were absolutely guilty and would accept the brutality of prison life
as their lot, would turn to atheism. Others, who hope to redeem
themselves try very hard to find a religious alternative to being
hopeless.

Atheism offers humanity nothing. It is not a "truth" since it cannot
be proven any more than religion can. It is not a lifestyle, a "way" a
"path" or a set of doctrines or rules for living. It is simply a non-
belief in God. It is what it is. It cannot condemn anything or condone
anything. It cannot lead or direct. It simply is a statement of one
person's beliefs.
No atheist can really say "Atheism made me a better person." Where are
the foundations built by atheism? Hospitals? Schools? Charities? Where
is the Atheists Want to Feed the World organizations? If I saw any of
these I might think atheism has a real agenda. But it is more of a
self-centered way of saying "I think I am better than you. So now I
can insult your beliefs without compunction." try aleviating some
human suffering in the name of No God At All. Then I'll care about the
ideal. Otherwise, to blindly sit around saying "I don't believe in God
and you are an ass for believing in God!" is rather destructive and
monumentally selfish.
