So, by that logic, when we were supplying the Mujahadeen rebels in
Afghanistan with stinger missles, the Soviets would have been
justified in attacking the US?

No. For any number of reasons.
1) The United States has a history of lending a hand to those
countries that we have vanquished. The Soviets were ruthless
in their suppression of civil rights. Both at home and abroad.
2) The simple law of might: The Soviets were afraid of us just
as we were afraid of them. Neither side was stupid or insane enough
to launch a nuclear strike.
This is about a terrorist state, run by religious kooks and them
