Actually untrue. If such were the case, no evolution would occur.
Because only the initial species would have survived. As it is we
cannot trace our origins back to an initial species, because it
evolved. The test for all sentient intelligent species is to evolve to
become more sentient and more intelligent, providing themselves a
niche to survive in, in an eco-system they cherish and care for, which
allows for other species to co-habit with them, and provides for
access to evolution for ALL species. We do this by simply not
destroying ourselves or the planet.

So far, we have done abominably.

Therefore we may not be either sentient or intelligent.

It remains to be seen.

The test is just beginning.
