Dear Ellie,
Though there can be many reasons why ghosts linger on earth, the most
common experience of people is trouble caused by departed ancestors.
Actually through research performed it has been found that in today's
times most of the people are affected by their ancestors. This is
especially so in case of drug addicts where it was found that 70% of
them suffer from possession by ghosts.
As it is a long topic and I do not consider myself the authority on
the subject I will just give a short overview here and give you 2
links below to articles which discuss these subjects.
The main reason that the ancestor ghosts bother us are:
- Due to unfulfilled desires and
- Due to the inability to move on in the after life and attain a
higher positive region or sub-region.
In terms of unfulfilled desires, the reasons are the following:
- Anger directed at descendants who do not use their inheritance in
accordance with the ancestors' wishes.
- Ancestors who have an attachment to the family and still want things
to be done their way.
- Ancestors who are addicted to some physical desire such as
cigarettes, drugs, ***, food, etc. They take advantage of the
remaining give-and-take account (karma) between them and their
descendants to possess their descendants and fulfill their desires.
Departed ancestors trouble their descendants instead of others with
whom they may possibly have a give-and-take account with; this is
because the bond between blood relations is the strongest.
In terms of being stuck in a particular region, it relates to the
state of humanity nowadays.
As most people nowadays are not of very high spiritual level, and as
very few people perform spiritual practice, the following happens:
- they do not have the ability to protect themselves in the subtle
world
- they do not know how to be propelled to the higher regions
- they end up in regions of netherworld (closest relation would be
purgatory) or one of the regions of hell
As a result, they are either captured by the higher level ghosts who
use them for their means or are stuck at one plane unable to persevere
further. If they are stuck at a certain plane and as they do not wish
to be there they are in panic and try to get help. As in the physical
world, when we are in trouble we ask family, so in the subtle world
they turn to their family to ask for help. The only way they know how
to get our attention is usually through causing pain.
Unfortunatelly, the problem is that most people do not know what needs
to be done to help their ancestors so they do not help. Then the
ancestors keep bothering them even more.
