I often want some time away from a person after a breakup, too.

I have several exes that I don't have anything much to say to. I don't
hate them (although in a few cases I'm still angry about certain things
they did) but there just doesn't feel like a strong basis for a
connection any more, and there's no significant overlap in our social
circles, so no need to find a basis.

I have other exes I'm on friendly terms with. 

I don't think I've ever cared what sort of relation****p other people
have with my exes. I can imagine cir***stances where I would care, but I
guess I'm lucky they never came up. I can imagine its being awkward if
we're all in the same social circle, but that's not the same thing as
feeling negative about the fact of a relation****p.

As for making people choose, I generally don't think I can make people
do much of anything.
